Error 3091: Recovery Steps

This article provides additional information and recovery steps to follow if you encounter a message with the text "Error 3091".

What is Error 3091?

Error 3091 may occur under some very rare circumstances in which an error has occurred that has caused a corruption of data in the file you are working with.

When this occurs, Aeon Timeline immediately saves two separate backups of your file:

  • Your file the last time it was saved
  • Your current file, including any unsaved changes that were made prior to the error occurring.

What should I do if I encounter this error?

If this error occurs, you should do the following:

  1. Immediately close your timeline file.
  2. You may be asked whether to save any unsaved changes. It is safe to choose "Yes" for this option if you want those changes preserved (remember that a backup of the previously saved file has been saved, and can be recovered if needed).
  3. Quit and re-launch the Aeon Timeline application.
  4. Re-open the timeline file you were working in, and check its contents is correct and up to date.
    1. If the file appears correct, it is safe to carry on working in the file where you left off.
    2. If the file does not open correctly or does not look correct to you, refer to the steps below to recover a backup version of the file.

Where to find the backup files

If you need to recover the backup versions of the files, you will first need to navigate to the folder where the backup files are being saved:

On MacOS:

  1. Open a new Finder window
  2. Open the Go menu, and choose Go to Folder
  3. Paste the following address into the modal dialog, replacing your_username with the username for your MacOS user account: /Users/your_username/Library/Application Support/Aeon Timeline/SpecialBackup

On Windows:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Navigate to the following folder, replacing your_username with the username for your Windows account: C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Aeon Timeline\SpecialBackup

On iOS:

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Navigate to On my iPad/iPhone > Aeon Timeline > Special Backup

How to recover backup files

  1. Once you have navigated to the correct folder, ensure your files are sorted by date.
  2. Look for the two most recent files with names related to the timeline file you are working on.
    • The backup files will have the same name as your original file, but potentially with an increasing number added to the front if there are other backup files with the same name.
    • These will typically be the top most recent files
  3. The earlier of these two backup files will be a copy of the last saved version of the file, as it was when the error occurred.
  4. The later backup file will also include any unsaved changes
  5. Copy both of those backup files to a different location on your computer. Do not override your original file at this stage.
  6. When you have safely copied the files out of the Special Backups folder, open each file, and determine which one you wish to keep.
  7. Once you are comfortable the recovered file has everything you need, you can choose to replace your original file with this version if you wish.
